(4) WALT DISNEY STUDIO

Pinocchio 1940

pencil and watercolor on animation sheet, 8 3/4 x 11 1/2

Puppeteer and sculptor Bob Jones worked in Joe Grant’s Character Model Department from 1938 to 1942. He left Disney in 1942, then returned in 1954 as a consultant to contribute to the development of Disneyland. Much of his time in the Character Model Dept. was spent creating three-dimensional models for use in visualizing and animating characters and objects. Two views of a sailboat for the escape from Monstro (it became a raft in the film) are shown in this original design drawing that is accompanied by two black-and-white, 41Ž2 x 61Ž2 photographs of the model Jones built. Note Cleo’s goldfish bowl shown in the drawings and that the model is set on a pivot, no doubt to allow simulation of it rocking on the waves.

Corner pin holes and light handling of art.

Lady and the Tramp 1955

pencil on animation sheet, 8 1/4 x 5 1/4, 5 3/4 x 5 1/2

The rough animation drawings of the 1950s features tend to be more detailed and finished than those of earlier days. Perhaps it is because in that decade the Studio switched from cleaning up the rough drawings to making a completely separate set of final animation drawings based on the roughs. Here are two fine "rough" animation drawings of Lady and Tramp that demonstrate how attractive such drawings can be.

Minor edge wear and darkening.

(9) WALT DISNEY STUDIO

Fantasia 1940

pastel on black animation sheet, 7 1/4 x 7

Usually concept or inspirational art produced in the development of an animated film is used to explore emotions or to set a mood, with the final look of the film often appearing quite different. A rare exception is the beautiful pastel art created in development of Fantasia’s Nutcracker Suite,  for which Disney’s artists achieved a similar textured finish in the final cel art. Here is a handsome pastel image of three thistle dancers from the Russian Dance sequence. Included is Courvoisier Galleries’ label of authenticity that states, in part: "This is an original story sketch from the Walt Disney Studios, created in the production of Walt Disney’s Fantasia. This is one of a limited number of drawings. Only 1 are [sic] available in this group of Ballet of the Flowers."
